In Remembrance…

On Wednesday November 11, 2015 we pay tribute and remember those members of the armed forces – some who selflessly sacrificed their own precious lives in the line of duty — who have served their nation in war, in armed conflict, and in the effort of sustaining world peace.

Past, present and future we salute those who have served and those who continue to serve at home and overseas. Without them there would be no freedom.

Real Estate News

CMHC report says there is “weak evidence of problematic conditions” in Calgary’s housing market.

Yes, it has been forecast that the Calgary Real Estate Market will dip in 2015 and that average home prices will slide, but there’s always a silver lining: thankfully we had a bit of a cushion.

Fall Back this Weekend!

As the saying goes, spring forward, fall back…

Don’t forget to turn back your clocks this weekend and enjoy that extra hour of sleep Saturday night!

“Daylight Savings Time” is a way of making better use of the daylight in the evenings by setting the clocks forward one hour during the longer days of summer, and back again in the fall.

Daylight savings time will end with a “fall back” to standard time on Sunday November 1, at 2 a.m.

Fall Clean-up, Recycling & Winter Prep Tips

It’s that time of year again…yard work, recycling and preparing for winter before the snow flies!

Here are a few maintenance tips to get clean-up and winter prep started:

  • The fall always brings that beautiful golden hue, and this year some gorgeous fall weather here in Calgary, perhaps the last before winter sets in, and perfect for doing yard work once all those orange and golden leaves have fallen. Save yourself some time next spring, rake them up now and take advantage of our city’s Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program which runs until November 8.
  • Not only do your leaves cover your yard, but they can also end up in your eavestroughs. If you leave the leaves over the winter months they can decay and be an open invitation for ants, spiders and mosquitoes. And, clogged and overflowing troughs can be a risk for your home’s proper water drainage leading to potential foundation issues.
  • Yard maintenance equipment such as mowers, trimmers and blowers should be emptied of unused fuel so that sediment doesn’t build up and clog the fuel lines. No one wants the surprise of having to re-invest in lawn equipment first thing in the spring!
  • Don’t forget to disconnect garden hoses so that any residual water doesn’t freeze in them. It’s a good idea to store the hoses in your shed or garage until warm sunny spring days return to extend its service life.
  • The heating and cooling systems in your house play vital roles when it comes to keeping your home comfortable. It’s important, to ensure that the equipment that keeps the temperature just right is maintained properly. Be sure to change your furnace’s air filter and keep extras on hand throughout the winter months. Filters should be changed every one to two months to keep it working optimally.

2015 Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program

This year’s Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program will run from September 25 to November 8.

During this program residents can recycle their bagged leaves and pumpkins by taking them to a leaf and pumpkin composting drop-off location. Composting leaves and pumpkins is an easy way to keep material out of the landfills and is one of the many ways people can reduce waste, reuse and recycle.

Brown bags are best!

Residents are encouraged to use paper yard waste bags, available at many local yard and garden retailers. They are:

1. Better for the environment

Because these bags are made of paper, they are completely compostable along with the leaves and pumpkins, leaving no waste behind. Plastic bags are not compostable and are unfit for recycling after the contents are removed, so all that plastic ends up in the landfill.

2. More efficient

City workers can put paper yard waste bags straight into the compost rows without the additional step of opening the bags and removing the contents.

Seasonal drop-off locations have been set up around Calgary. View the list of drop-off locations »
